Be a part of UMBC Mock Trial's success!
UMBC Mock Trial Program A Project of Student Organizations
We've been invited-- help us get there!
Hello friends and supporters of UMBC Mock Trial! We are asking for your help today, as we prepare for our sixth competitive season.
Over the last several seasons our program has proudly represented our school. Over the last two years especially we have made tremendous strides forward, receiving bids to the Opening Round Championship Series ('15, '16) and becoming a nationally ranked team. Less than one-fourth of teams nationwide advanced to the Opening Round Championships last year, and even fewer have done it for two consecutive seasons.
Mock Trial is a courtroom simulation in which two teams composed of three attorneys and three witnesses compete against one another. Each team presents an opening statement, a closing statement, three direct examinations, and three cross examinations. This fantastic experience allows our team of 20+ future lawyers and scholars to develop and hone vital critical thinking and public speaking skills, and showcases UMBC's academic excellence to the rest of the country.
The season consists of invitational tournaments in the fall semester and and American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) playoff tournaments in the spring semester. Invitational tournaments consume the majority of our budget as we have to pay both the invitational fee to the hosting school and hotel costs for overnight trips.
This year, we have been invited to eight high-profile tournaments and hope to attend these six if we can afford to go:
- Drexel: October 15-16
- Elizabethtown: October 22-23
- William and Mary: October 29-30
- Temple: November 5-6
- University of Pennsylvania: November 19-20
- Georgetown: January 28-29
We are working hard to prepare for this busy season, but we need your help too. Each of the tournaments has registration fees and most of the tournaments require overnight stays. This is the opportunity we've been working toward to become a nationally recognized team, but our current funding isn't enough to cover the additional trips. Through your generosity we can continue to build a program that will represent UMBC with pride across the nation.
We've met our stretch goal and are aiming even higher! With your help we can get to our first FOUR tournaments!
With a week still left in our campaign, we're more than 80% there! We've increased our goal to cover the next tournament in the season, at William and Mary. Thanks to all of our donors for your overwhelming support!
Help us get to our first FOUR tournaments:
The UMBC College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Provost and Finance Board have generously provided some funding-- but we need to make up the gap in order to attend the first tournaments of the season at Drexel, Elizabethtown, William & Mary and Temple.
Your gift today will help us pay for the registration fees and lodging reservation for these fast-approaching events. Any additional funds will be used to purchase demonstrative exhibits, other trial materials, and additional lodging for members of our team.
Thank you for your support!
All funds raised are administered by the UMBC Foundation for the benefit of UMBC.
